The Problem with Water Leaks

Whether it is a leaky tap or a leaking pipe, water leaks may damage your home and cause health problems unless properly repaired or dealt with.

Water leakage may also affect the value of your home aside from damaging your health. To help you understand what can happen due to even a small amount of water leaking from the ceiling or elsewhere, here are a handful of problems that can occur.

Furniture and Carpet Water Damage

Water can seep through materials like upholstery, carpets, drywall, subflooring, and wood. Even the smallest of leaks can cause water to seep into your furniture and carpets. Wood can warp or bend when exposed to water for a prolonged period. Moist or wet wood can attract insects and termites. When not properly dealt with, it can infest the rest of the home.

Wet carpet does not only smell bad but can also lead to the growth of mould and mildew. Mould can produce spores that travel through the air and cause breathing problems or trigger allergies. Inhaled spores can trigger asthma attacks, coughing, sneezing, itchy and red eyes, and other health issues.

Structural Damage Due to Leaks

Water can cause wood to weaken and rot. If your home is made mostly of wood, water leaking from the ceiling can compromise the structural integrity. The roof and wall framing, ceiling joists, and rafters can become permanently damaged. It can lead to expensive repairs.

Also, water damaged ceilings can be unsightly and negatively impact the value of your home. Leaks can cause discolorations or stain on the ceiling paint or plasterwork, which can be difficult to remove.

May Lead to a Fire

Aside from carpet water damage, a water leak may also cause a more dangerous problem – fire. When the     water reaches the wiring or electrical system within the home, it can cause a short circuit, which may cause a fire. Not only will this cause loss of property, but it can also lead to loss of life.

It is important that any leak, no matter how small, close to or near any electrical wiring or electrical appliances, be repaired immediately.

In most cases, homeowners do not pay much attention to small leakages. But they can lead to serious problems and should be dealt with as soon as they are noticed.
